A Mother’s Faith, A Child’s Future: Baby Akosua Abubakar’s Story of Hope

Some stories remind us why hope matters.

Baby Akosua Abubakar’s journey began with uncertainty, fear, and overwhelming challenges. Today, her story stands as a powerful testament to the life-changing impact of early treatment, compassionate support, and a mother’s unwavering determination.

When Akosua was born, her family faced more than they had anticipated. Alongside clubfoot, she experienced other health challenges that made her early days particularly difficult. According to her mother, Akosua could not cry normally after birth and was unable to breastfeed. Feeding her required patience, care, and determination.

The emotional burden became even heavier when some relatives began to lose hope.

“They said there was no way the child could survive, especially with feet like that,” her mother recalled.

For a mother already struggling to care for a large family with limited resources, the situation was heartbreaking. Yet despite the criticism, uncertainty, and financial hardship, she refused to give up on her daughter.

The training brings together twenty participants, organized into five teams representing selected health facilities across Ghana. The course is designed to equip frontline health professionals with practical skills and a mindset for continuous quality improvement in healthcare delivery.

For a mother already struggling to care for a large family with limited resources, the situation was heartbreaking. Yet despite the criticism, uncertainty, and financial hardship, she refused to give up on her daughter.

The journey was not easy.

The hardest part for her mother was coming to the clinic every week and seeing other children making visible progress while silently wondering if her own child would ever get there.

One question stayed with her throughout the journey:

“Madam, will my child’s own also be successful?”

Each time, she was encouraged to trust God, remain committed to treatment, and continue following medical advice.

As the weeks passed, the changes became visible.

The tiny feet that once appeared severely twisted gradually responded to treatment. Each new cast brought improvement. Hope slowly replaced fear. Confidence began to grow.

Eventually, Akosua reached one of the most important milestones in her treatment journey, successful correction of her feet and transition into bracing.

For her mother, it was a moment she would never forget.

The same child many believed would never survive was now making remarkable progress.

The same mother who once sat quietly in the clinic and cried was now encouraging other caregivers who were beginning their own journeys.

She shared her story, reassured worried parents, and became a source of hope to others.

Today, Akosua’s feet have been significantly corrected, demonstrating the effectiveness of early intervention and consistent adherence to treatment. While the family continues to face financial challenges and additional health concerns, they now look to the future with renewed confidence.

“The financial support has also gone a long way to help me. Honestly speaking, I am very grateful,” her mother shared.

Akosua’s story is more than a story about correcting clubfoot.

It is a story about a mother’s resilience.

It is a story about refusing to give up when others have lost hope.

It is a story about the power of compassionate healthcare, counseling, and community support.

Most importantly, it is a reminder that clubfoot is treatable and that every child deserves the opportunity to walk, run, play, and reach their full potential.

Implemented by the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) in partnership with Hope Walks, the Ghana Clubfoot Program continues to restore hope to families across Ghana by ensuring that children born with clubfoot receive timely, quality treatment.

Akosua’s journey reminds us that when hope is restored, futures are transformed.
